Translation of the video speech by Hayham Chamas. Karama Beirut

Good evening dears - our viewers (followers) wherever you are..

We come to see you through this activity presented by ANHAR (the Arab Network for Human Rights Films), in which we will screen the film "The Massaker" at the initiative of Karama Beirut and jointly with the Karama Human Rights Film Festival in Amman, and the "UMAM Research and Documentation" organization.

On the fourth of February, bullets of treachery assassinated the writer, publisher and political activist Lukman Slim, who was one of the most fervent fights for human rights and the defense of legitimacy and the constitution. Lukman is one of the directors of the "UMAM Research and Documentation" organization, which is a member of the ANHAR Network, a non-profit organization that creates an open archive of materials related to the social and political history of Lebanon, and UMAM also organizes discussions related to civil violence and the memory of war.

Lukman directed The Massacre, alongside Monica Burgmann and Hermann Theissen. The film provides details of the Sabra and Shatila massacre, which took place in 1982, narrated by the perpetrators of the horrific killings, which claimed the lives of a large number of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians, most of them women, children and the elderly. These unanswered questions emerge: What drives people to such extreme brutality, and how can the perpetrators survive?

Perhaps these questions did not lose their relevance and usefulness in posing, with the assassination of Lukman Slim, who was affected by the forces of darkness, oppression and intimidation.

We in Nahar are showing this film in solidarity with Lukman to show the truth, uphold the word of truth, and reject injustice, violence, discrimination and inequality. And if we lose colleague Lukman Slim, it will only be a spark, towards more efforts, in spreading (support) human rights awareness, through cinema and films.

Film Synopsis:

MASSAKER is – both in contents and aesthetically – a psycho-political study of six perpetrators, who participated in the massacre of Sabra and Shatila both on orders and on their own personal initiative. The film intertwines the mental dispositions of the killers with their political environment and broaches the phenomenon of collective violence through their accounts.
