A Tragi-Comedy Biopic Fantasia | A HIGHLY fictionalized biography of former Canadian Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King’s rise to power. But with more shoe fetishes, political ice-skating contests, and narwhal impalings. Using early cinema techniques, this film is expressionistic and dreamy — a surreal visual treat that purposely blurs the line between reality and fiction. This is an alternate reality Canada that might just be a dream, and a satire of over-earnest depictions of history. And with both cross-gender and color-blind casting that creates a “let’s put on a show” feel to the whole aesthetic. This is a fantastical experience like no other. A wintery reverie.
