SYNOPSIS

This documentary follows the pioneering Chinese-American photographer Sam Wang from his birthplace in Beijing to South Carolina on a journey of constant visual creation. While Sam demonstrated “an alternative way out” on his shifting cultural identity through living practice, his students seem to have different opinions on his decision. 


DIRECTOR - John Rash

John Rash is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer, and video artist originally from North Carolina. Rash earned an M.F.A. in Experimental and Documentary Art from Duke University, and a B.F.A. in Art Education from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro. Working as an educator for more than 15 years in both the United States and China, Rash is experienced as a classroom instructor, academic administrator, and director of events and student programs. He creates work that explores cultural outsiders and environmental topics through lens-based media as informed by documentary traditions. John was awarded the Soul of Southern Film award from Indie Memphis Film Festival in 2018 and continues to exhibit his work in festivals, galleries, and museums internationally.
