What We Inherit
United States | Experimental | 2021 | 6 minutes | English with subtitles
Director: Tiffany Chin Luong
SYNOPSIS
It’s universally human to wonder where we come from, how we came to be, and how we own the different chapters of our identities. In short bursts over the last decade, I have been trying to understand why my relationship with my parents was so tumultuous. I learned that one of the antidotes to breaking the cycle of intergenerational trauma was to reconnect to cultural roots. Simpler than it sounds, it makes sense - know who you are, have space to be who you are, and you won’t need to hurt others. I photographed and interviewed my parents, spending more time in my childhood home over 10 weeks than I had in the last 10 years. This became What We Inherit, a multimedia piece that began as an inquiry into my grandparents' immigration story from China and ended up being a study of wounding and healing from intergenerational trauma.
