This month's Arab Film Series - Next Gen Sudan&nbsp;-brings us an intimate look at Sudanese youth - the challenges they face, the tough lessons learned, and the pride of being the next generation to make an impact. These three short Sudanese films, directed by a powerhouse of young, brilliant Sudanese filmmakers, give us a glimpse into the triumphs and troubles facing this next generation. The films are Video-On-Demand style, so guests can view these films at their leisure and on their own time. Films are only available to audiences in U.S. and Canada. To make this experience complete, we are pleased to host a live, virtual talkback with Hashim Hassan (Director of A Handful of Dates), Sarra Idris (Director of Adam &amp; Howa) and Suzannah Mirghani (Director of Al-Sit)! The talkback will take place live, at 3 p.m. EST on Sunday, July 18, 2021.

Synopsis AL- Sit: In a cotton-farming village in Sudan, 15-year-old Nafisa has a crush on Babiker, but her parents have arranged her marriage to Nadir, a young Sudanese businessman living abroad. Nafisa’s grandmother Al-Sit, the powerful village matriarch, has her own plans for Nafisa’s future. But can Nafisa choose for herself? Filmmaker Bio<img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/f056158672a445fc8d82a23df4f8e963.jpg" width="120" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;">Suzannah Mirghani is a writer, researcher, and independent filmmaker, highlighting stories from the Arab world. She is a media studies and museum studies graduate and publishes creative and scholarly work on a variety of social issues. Being of mixed race Sudanese and Russian backgrounds, she is most interested in stories that examine the complexity of identity. Suzannah is the writer, director, and producer of AL-SIT (2020), Grand Prix winner at the 2021 Tampere Film Festival (Academy Award qualifying), Canal+ Award winner at the 2021 Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, and Jury Award at the Busan International Short Film Festival (2021). Her previous shorts include CARAVAN (2016) and HIND’S DREAM (2014).

Al-Sit

She is the partner and co-founder of Golden Tusk Labs, a creative development company devoted to telling great stories from unexplored perspectives. As an editor, Sarra has over 15 years of experience in various projects across TV, commercials, web series, short films, and music videos. Companies include NBC Universal (Saturday Night Live), PSYOP, Google Creative Lab, MPC, Twitter, Pentagram, and BBC America. As a director, Sarra's short films have been screened at the Diversity in Cannes Short Film Showcase, New York African Film Festival, Cinetopia Film Festival at the Smithsonian Arab American National Museum (AANM), and The ICA London. Outside of her professional ventures, Sarra is committed to promoting cross-cultural understanding for underrepresented voices. She worked and taught in Sudan (in both Kosti and Khartoum) as part of The Cultural Healing Program and as an Artist in Residence at the Rashid Diab Arts Centre in Khartoum.

Synopsis A Handful of Dates: In a mythical Sudanese village between the desert and the Nile, a young boy enjoys an idyllic childhood, taking pleasure in the fertile fruits of the land and basking by the river. But the boy's precious world begins to unravel when he learns the disturbing truth behind his family's fortune and a certain farmer's inevitable demise. <img src="https://storage.googleapis.com/eventive-static/74d9a95590143ecfc169ba80b6a9f729.jpg" width="188" style="display: inline; float: left; margin: 0px 1em 1em 0px;"> Filmmaker BioHashim Hassan received his B.A. in Middle East Studies from UC Santa Barbara and his M.F.A. in Directing from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles.&nbsp;A Handful of Dates is his 4th short film and his first filmmaking venture in Sudan.&nbsp;Hashim is currently a freelance Video Producer serving local businesses and Non-Profits in California’s Central Valley while pursuing his passion for writing, acting and directing in TV and Film.&nbsp;
