Darrell knows in his heart as he walks to his camp the terrible decision he is faced with. His friend and fellow homeless compatriot has reached a bitter end. The cruelty of winter has left Chance’s leg frostbit. It’s either lose the leg or end it all here and now. Either way Chance won’t survive. Each of the camper’s recount their experiences with death, the subtlety of ‘darkness’ and what that specific word truly means on a human level. Fire and death have much deeper meanings as Darell chokes Chance to death and lights his body on fire. As we rise to the city, all of those safely tucked away in their shelters and homes have no idea of the horrors that just took place. If that wasn’t enough, Chance is naval veteran.
