The devastating effects of climate change are beginning to impact every person on earth. From wildfires to hurricanes, rising temperatures to landslides, we are learning to adapt to a new normal, one where we must confront what we truly value and how we cope with loss. Through the lens of the recent fires in California, PROOF OF LOSS focuses on how one young woman and her father are forced to come together and examine the complexities of mourning and the connection between grief, relief, and survival. We shot PROOF OF LOSS over three days in Santa Rosa and Paradise, CA, both areas that were heavily devastated by recent fires. We worked closely with the local communities to ensure that this story was told with authenticity and respect to those who experienced this trauma firsthand. We put an emphasis on employing a diverse crew with a roster of entirely female department heads, and our team reflected the connection this story and region has to preserving relationships with family - biological and chosen. From our sibling producers of Laura Zak and Graham Waleryszak, to our real life father/daughter duo in Colette and Dylan McDermott, to director Katherine Fisher's father composing our score, and the many LGBTQ crew that we call family, this film represents to us what is truly valuable. It is a memory of the comfort of those we have lost, and the desire for connection with those who remain. PROOF OF LOSS is the first production from the brother-sister team behind Drinkwater Studios, and is Katherine Fisher's directorial debut.
