MEET THE FILMMAKER: CHARLOTTE MARS

Charlotte Mars is an interdisciplinary filmmaker from Australia, whose cinematic works explore LGBTQIA+ identity and the lives of women. Recently, Charlotte wrote and directed the short film GIRL AND BODY which had its international premiere In Competition at Berlinale 2020, after its Australian Premiere In Competition at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2019. Charlotte was awarded a 2019 SheDoc Directing Fellowship and was a 2016 WIFTS honouree for her social impact work as producer and co-writer of award-winning feature doc GAYBY BABY, with director Maya Newell, which played at over 50 festivals worldwide, sparking conversations about LGBTQIA+ families and helping promote same-sex marriage rights. Charlotte began their career as mentee to director Cate Shortland (Somersault, Lore, Berlin Syndrome) and made their first short in 2013, the award-winning AWAKE. Charlotte went on to produce and co-write the ABC documentary GROWING UP GAYBY (director: Maya Newell) and was Development Manager of NBCU's Matchbox Pictures, where she worked on major film, TV and documentary productions including GLITCH, SECRET CITY and THE FAMILY LAW. Charlotte is currently filming a feature documentary, MUSCLE, and writing their debut feature, SOMNIO. Charlotte has a BA from the University of Technology, Sydney, has co-authored a children's book, and is an occasional guest lecturer at Sydney University.
