MEET THE FILMMAKER: SONIA MALFA

Sonia Malfa is a Puerto Rican-American filmmaker based in New York. She is repped by GOOD COMPANY (US) and FAMILIA (UK) for commercials, music videos and branded content.

Sonia was awarded the Webby Award - Jury Award for Fashion and Beauty in 2020, shortlisted for the 1.4 Awards (2019), and LEYOHMI was named Best of Music Video by NPR. Sonia is featured in SHOOT Magazine’s April 2017 “Up-and-Coming Directors: Assembling the Spring Collection” Story and she was selected for the inaugural Commercial Directors Diversity Program (CDDP) 2017 by the DGA and AICP.

She has directed for Facebook, Vogue Italia, L’Oreal, Carol’s Daughter, Citibank, Malin+Goetz, Dis Arts and Maroon World. Her films have screened internationally at film festivals including the Tribeca Film Festival, LA Shorts Fest, Woodstock FF, Milan Fashion FF, Way Out West Festival, Los Angeles Latino FF and on Booooooom TV.

Sonia is currently in development to direct her feature narrative debut, IT'S ALWAYS SUNNY, which she co-wrote with Trae Harris.

She holds a BA and MA in American Studies with a focus on Gender and Race relations.
