‘Razia’ means the one who prays. For Razia Shabnam, one of the first Indian women to become a boxing coach and an international referee, the most meaningful form of prayer is to help her protégés, especially girls, learn to respect themselves. Burqa Boxers tells the story of Parveen Sajda, Ajmira Khatoon and Taslima Khatoon as they train with Razia Shabnam, while negotiating poverty and tradition, and learning to face the biggest obstacle in their paths, fear–fear of the world, of the family, and of not fitting in. It is a portrait of that first baby step as they stumble, fall, and learn to pick themselves to fight for their dreams. It’s a story of their agency.
