Like&nbsp;We Have Boots,&nbsp;Raise the Umbrellas&nbsp;is part of filmmaker and playwright Evans Chan’s effort to document Hong Kong’s political trajectory in a series of films that, in his words, “summarize issues, provide historical perspective, and hopefully dig into corners of the interviewees’ psyches.”&nbsp;Raise the Umbrellas&nbsp;traces the origins of the 2014 Umbrella Movement in pro-democracy struggles dating to Hong Kong’s time under British colonial rule. Interviews with longtime activists and emerging student leaders reveal the broad and at times uneasy coalition that came together to occupy the streets, while gay Cantonpop singers, young women student leaders, and “umbrella mothers” reveal the necessity of democracy for marginalized voices. Their words are intercut with dances and songs—including the movement anthem that gives the film its title—fueled by the urgency of the protests and the creativity of artists.&nbsp;

Raise the Umbrellas

BAMPFA and the San Diego Asian Film Festival are pleased to copresent this prerecorded panel discussion to accompany streaming presentations of Evans Chan’s new film, <a href="https://bampfa.org/event/we-have-boots" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">We Have Boots</a>. In addition&nbsp;to the film, panelists discuss recent activities of democracy activists; implications of the 2020 National Security Law; and relations among the US, Hong Kong, and China in the current political&nbsp;climate. The panelists are Chan, an award-winning New York– and Hong Kong–based filmmaker; Alex Yong Kang&nbsp;Chow, a social activist from&nbsp;Hong Kong featured in&nbsp;We Have Boots and a doctoral student in geography at UC Berkeley; and Sheena Chestnut Greitens, associate professor at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin and an affiliate of the university's Strauss Center and Clements Center on National Security; with additional comments by Jerome A. Cohen, faculty director emeritus of New York University’s US-Asia Law Institute. The discussion is moderated by Rachel Stern,&nbsp;professor of law and political science at UC Berkeley, where she also holds the&nbsp;Pamela P. Fong and Family Distinguished Chair in China Studies. Brian Hu, artistic director of the San Diego Asian Film Festival and assistant professor of television, film, and new media at San Diego State University, introduces.
