A family that has lived off the land outside Bucharest for nearly twenty years is forcibly relocated to the bustling metropolis in this immersive documentary on social integration, urban versus rural life, and how to define the success of a family unit. In the abandoned marshlands of the Bucharest Delta, the gruff patriarch Gica, his wife, Niculina, and their seven children have the run of an overgrown realm, a kind of Romanian Family Robinson barely getting by—but at least living on their own terms. When the government turns the land into a public park, they’re packed off to Bucharest and its very different kind of wilderness; one elder son, though, may find his own path forward. Romanian investigative reporter turned filmmaker Radu Ciorniciuc followed the family’s journey for four years, creating a sympathetic portrait of outsiders forced to join a society that doesn’t even want them. Winner of Sundance’s World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award for Cinematography.
