Amit Dutta is best known for his deep engagement with India’s art and artists from ancient times to the present day. Through them, he also engages in India’s myths and legends, and recently he has turned his attention to Indian writers as well. This program highlights the range of his explorations. The Game of Shifting Mirrors takes us from a 1920s museum to the ruins of an eighth-century temple to contemplate India’s complicated history. Tape-39 consists of footage of a journey Dutta took in 2008 while working on a film about the contemporary Pardhan Gond artist Jangarh Singh Shyam. In House of Paintings, miniature paintings on display in a former palace come to life through animation. A scholar of the Sanskrit playwright Bhasa enacts scenes from his work in the largely silent Blue Elephant. Arising from Dutta’s enthusiasm for chess, Wittgenstein Plays Chess with Marcel Duchamp, or How Not to Do Philosophy explores aesthetics and perception; it is adapted from Steven B. Gerrard’s essay and features animation by Ayswarya S. Dutta.
