In a desperate bid for freedom, a Lithuanian sailor, Simas Kudirka, decides to jump across the water from a Soviet vessel anchored off Martha’s Vineyard on to an American boat, on Thanksgiving Day in 1970. To the outcry of the world media, he's returned to the Soviets, tried for treason, and imprisoned for 8 years in Siberia. The incident set off a series of protests begging for his freedom throughout the US, including several in Boston. New information about Simas’s citizenship surfaces, marking the beginning of a long political battle to save him. Through eye-witness reports, rare archival footage, and a dramatic first-person re-enactment by the now 90-year-old, the film takes the viewer on a journey that became an inspiration for people, pictures and politics, reaching all the way up to the White House. His leap for freedom set off a chaotic series of events, leading to one of the biggest political muddles during the Cold War.

Belmont World Film "Passport"

We are pleased to present a series of three films in observance of World Refugee Awareness Month, honoring the world’s 22.5 million refugees and those who work on refugee and immigrant issues.   Three films are available for streaming for one week each starting on a Tuesday at 12:01 AM until the following Monday at 9:00 PM. Each week's film will culminate in an online discussion on Mondays at 7:30 PM, led by the filmmaker or an expert speaker on Zoom.

Belmont World Film's 19th International Film Series, "Family Ties," runs March 16-May 10, and features 8 of the world's top films. All but one film stream for one week each, culminating in virtual discussions on Mondays at 7:30 PM, led by either the filmmaker or an expert on the film's subject.
