One small First Nation on Canada’s West Coast is taking big steps to claim rightful power over its resources in a territory still rich with fish, bears, old-growth trees and kelp forests by reviving their stories and the laws within them. But after immense loss and with ever-dwindling resources, will the Kitasoo Xai’xais people be able to assert their laws in time to protect what they have left?


Director's Bio:

Deirdre Leowinata is an emerging director and cinematographer driven by a passion for strong multimedia narratives that address our relationship with the planet. Deirdre combines a rigorous commitment to evidence-based storytelling with a knack for personal and evocative stories, which she has brought to a multitude of short-form documentary work. Douglas Neasloss (Muq'vas Glaw) is the visionary elected chief of Kitasoo Xai’xais First Nation in British Columbia. He envisioned Keepers of the Land as a tool to inspire his Nation and to show the world what is possible by re-empowering indigenous people.
