Two Lives. One Gift. A post-kidney transplant memoir, told as a dream-like prayer to Mom.
Directors' Bio:
Long before he was a filmmaker, Destyn trained to play tennis professionally. A few years after kidney failure stopped his sports career, he struggled to find what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. When he picked up a camera he found something that made him feel full. He learned that cinema can force people to sympathize with people they cannot relate to. He wants to capture sensitive and human moments that anyone can feel. He create films that portray the humanity and complexity of the lives of black people. He wants people to see his community the way he sees it. He want people who know nothing of them to see their humanity with sympathetic eyes and find themselves in these characters. Destyn yearns for the chance to make that normal.
Compulsively inventive, the aptly-named Wonder rips into every project with a uniquely energetic vigor and superhuman positivity. Combining innovative technical tools with an innate human sensitivity, this Emmy, Lion and Pencil award-winning director’s passionate approach to storytelling has been embraced by the indie film world where his debut feature Feral has been praised by critics as an “immersive, well-timed roller coaster.” In 2018, Andrew co-founded Tomorrow, a production company where his many roles include mentoring younger directors and pushing the industry toward inclusion and diversity while trying to make the world around us a kinder place.
