PROGRAM: LIFERAFT EARTH

At 155 miles per hour, Hurricane Michael ripped through the Florida Panhandle on October 10th, 2018, the brunt of its intensity landing on the shores of Mexico Beach. Media talking heads leveraged the crisis to debate the existence of climate change, providing a public pedestal to denialists and equating opinion with scientific fact. Using lulling drone footage and a meditative sound collage of Hurricane Michael, media pundit Sean Hannity, and a gulf coast resident living in one of the epicenters of climate change, “Among Sirens” reveals the contradictions on view with each catastrophic ecological event: the feedback loop of opinion against the backdrop of landscapes and communities devastated by global warming.

Ten years ago Barbara Crites left Wisconsin and moved to St John in the US Virgin islands. Living next to the Caribbean Sea, she outfitted herself with the latest snorkel gear and an underwater camera. For the next decade she documented underwater marine life and collected over 90,000+ photos. Her photo collection is testimony to the changing nature of life in our oceans due to acidification and warming temperatures.

Charging scenes of the present with dystopian speculation, Field Resistance blurs the boundaries between documentary filmmaking and science fiction to investigate overlooked environmental devastation in the overlooked state of Iowa. Footage collected from disparate locations—a university herbarium, karst sinkholes inhabited by primordial flora and fauna, a telecommunication tower job site, a decaying grain silo, among others—interlocks to evoke a narrative of present danger and future disaster, of plant expansion and humanity’s retreat. The film rejects the human individual as the focus of narrative cinema, and, instead, adopts the perspective of a symbiotic “implosive whole” in which human and nonhumans are related in an overlapping, non-total way.

Field Resistance

Three narrators converge in the deserts of New Mexico, each with a separate story to tell. One narrator is J. Robert Oppenheimer, another is an extraterrestrial being, and the other is me.

The Elwha River Dam removal in Washington State was the largest dam removal project in US History. In this short experimental film, musician Melanie Curran gives a rock n' roll homily about the River's release. Expect salmon, sass, and a spiritual sanctuary for the six senses.

Ethiopia is a country in constant growth, 70% of the population is under 25 years old and plastic consumption has increased dramatically. Officially four million people live in Addis Abeba, but it is estimated that the real number is more than double. To calculate the consumption of plastic bottles is nearly impossible. Statistics say that there were 21 million bottles in 2010. By the end of 2020 there will be hundreds of millions of bottles.
