A fever dream. An infinitely morphing kaleidscopic stained glass window; bells that remind me of the sounds of Amsterdam, my second home after New York. Frantic REM sleep kicks in around 5 minutes... A pandemic film made under quarantine, Spring 2020. Hand-painted 16mm film. Direct animation. A camera-less Fluxus film. How do we survive this pandemic? We survive through art &amp; music.

Grip

A collaboration with a machine-learning based AI technology of next-frame prediction. The computerised synthesis of images by a neural network, learns video clips and then continues and recreates them according to its inner calculations. The reborn video images are then woven together into an audio-visual poem. In a rhythmic, hypnotic pace, nature scenes and human life images are reborn and fall apart, revealing alien-like visual snippets and surprising motion patterns, revealing both computer and human cognition processes and raising reflections regarding the implications and future of this new technology.

A one-minute poem film about building barriers vs. living with a heart full of love, filmed predominantly with an iPhone 5c, between 2015 and 2019, in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States. But - suddenly and mysteriously - you find yourself paralyzed. Gushing sounds fill your ears. Bright flashes of light flicker under your closed eyelids. Then you feel as if you are beginning to float... The second film in our tribute to the late parapsychologist D. Scott Rogo, murdered in 1990 under mysterious circumstances. Using the closest thing we can share for time travel--the moving image--to ask questions of time relative to light, motion, and mass. Does light create, prolong, reverse time? Does motion alter our experience of time? Does mass warp our sense of time?

The Photoplay Obeys the Laws of the Mind

Jealousy is an experimental 3D animation. It features an elemental digital construction of the plantation house meticulously described in the seminal 1957 novel La Jalousie by French writer Robbe-Grillet. No characters are depicted in the animation – just as the novel emphasizes settings and objects over characters/dialogue. The compulsively observed settings and objects reveal the obsessive mindset of the main character, a jealous husband who suspects his wife of having an affair. The soundtrack features sounds described in the novel; nocturnal animal cries, insects whirring, etc. The animation expands on the novel by making settings and objects dynamic; furniture self-constructs, objects move, and lights shift.

Jealousy

"Field of Vision" moves between the real and the imagined, the built and natural worlds, and explores how we see with both our eyes and our minds. It weaves together layers of images and sounds with police blotter reports and descriptions of visual and auditory hallucinations.

RHYTHM AS A GIRL is an experimental essay film that challenges notions of hierarchy within visual, bodily, and spiritual systems used by painters Hilma af Klint and Mark Rothko. af Klint's notes guide us through the 20th century and the artist's burgeoning understanding of perception and sensations.

A story about traveling alone told using footage scavenged from various mobile devices. An exploration of isolation and suicidal thoughts on The United States' Amtrak rail system.

Wish You Were Here

Fabula is an experimental film by Jordan Baseman that asks questions about our dreams and dream experiences during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020. The film is narrated by the Harvard Medical School Dream Researcher, Dr. Deirdre Barrett. We hear Dr. Barrett discuss various dreams that she has collected through her research into Pandemic Dreams, their collective commonality, their significance and meanings, and their relevance to our times. Dr. Barrett also comments on the uniqueness of the Pandemic and the unusual dreams that have arisen as a result. The film was recorded entirely in London during Lockdown, using 16mm film and 6k digital film cameras. Time-lapse footage of clouds, are super-imposed with footage of the Thames and threaded through, layered with various shots lit by infra-red light. Fabula muses on our relationships with ourselves, one another, our environments and the meanings of our dreams while living with Covid-19. Filmed in Lockdown is a series of new works of literary, musical, visual, and performance arts, commissioned for Culture in Quarantine by Arts Council England and BBC Arts.

the horizon, where the sky and the earth meet, is always elsewhere, a promised place where these two elements come together. a metaphor, an orienting, a promise of transition, change, transcendence. a place where the corporeal and spiritual meet, or are cleaved apart. also, here, the space between narrative and documentary, fact and fiction, is scratched between two voices. jayne love reads a text i wrote for her, short sentences on the concept of the horizon and the briefest suggestion of narrative collide with pieces of richard (oswan) williams' beautiful, rum-fueled living room sermons to me. when i was twenty i lived in richard and his wife mary’s apartment, the site of their voodoo spiritual temple in new orleans. of course, as priests and priestesses richard and mary spoke often of death, transcendence, ethics and health. our days were slow and filled with philosophical rumination, richard a brilliant old man schooling a young wandering wonderer. i recorded most everything on cassette tapes back then and some have made it here to the present. to this horizon we’re at now.
