PROGRAM: HUMAN AGENCY

This short experimental documentary looks at the Auntie Sewing Squad, a group of mostly women of color volunteers who came together following the U.S. government’s botched response to the COVID-19 crisis. The Aunties sew masks for farmworkers, day laborers, unhoused people, refugee and immigrant groups, First Nations tribes, recently incarcerated people, Black Lives Matter demonstrators, and others in need in the U.S. Using images, voices and sounds primarily generated by the Aunties themselves, in tandem with Kronos Quartet’s performance of Susie Ibarra’s “Pulsation,” this clip seeks to inspire others to work toward radical care in the time of coronavirus.

MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE tells the story of the student led struggle to win Puerto Rican Studies at Brooklyn College, CUNY, in the late 1960’s. The documentary is a mosaic of voices, film footage, photographs taken by student activists and music of Grammy award-winning musicians Arturo O’Farrill and Oscar Hernández. This important story highlights the powerful alliance Puerto Rican, African American and other progressive students and faculty forged that changed the face of higher education with the founding of one of the first Puerto Rican Studies departments in the nation.

Making the Impossible Possible: The Story of Puerto Rican Studies at Brooklyn College

Who has the right to the city? Who is allowed to linger on its streets, to see oneself in its landscapes, included and represented in its conceptions of ‘the public’? Through the creative examination of 'hostile design,' this video imagines public space as attuned to the needs and uses of marginally housed and houseless SF residents. The film is a collaboration between San Francisco based filmmaker Irene Gustafson and Tenderloin based and community embedded social practice ensemble, Skywatchers. Skywatchers began in 2011 in the tenant lounge of a Tenderloin SRO and has since grown into an ongoing conversation focused on the creation of new performance works emerging from an enduring collaboration between professional artists and formerly homeless resident artists of the neighborhood.
