A new demographic dawn is emerging across the planet
How do societies adapt when population decline becomes the dominant demographic reality—and what does that future look like for individuals in their everyday lives?
This extended screening event explores the deeper patterns behind falling birthrates, drawing on additional scenes and newly expanded topics not included in the original Birthgap feature documentary.
Following the screening, join filmmaker and published demographer Stephen J. Shaw for a live reflection and audience Q&A. Throughout the event, attendees can optionally participate in live chat — sharing insights and submitting questions in real time as the film unfolds.
Experience one of our highly interactive Birthgap Chats events — where documentary, data, and discussion come together.
Includes Chapters 6–10 of the Birthgap documentary.
See the original feature film overview below - selected for the New York Chelsea Film Festival.
This event is a live, scheduled virtual screening followed by an interactive Q&A with filmmaker and published data scientist Stephen J. Shaw. Estimated total event runtime: approximately 2 hours.
Two themed screening programs are available:
Becoming a Childless World explores how falling birthrates became a consistent global pattern. Drawing on international interviews and demographic analysis, it examines the structural shift reshaping modern societies.
The Dawn of an Inverted World examines the long-term consequences of sustained low fertility. Looking at aging societies in Japan and Europe, it explores the socio-economic realities already emerging — and what current research suggests about long-term stability.
Each program extends sections of the Birthgap feature documentary with additional footage and expanded analysis.
Immediately following the screening, Stephen J. Shaw joins live on video for moderated discussion and audience Q&A. Participants may submit questions throughout the event.
Birthgap Chats are shared viewing experiences, designed for thoughtful engagement rather than on-demand playback. A limited-time recording will be available for registered attendees who are unable to attend live.
