On his first solo flight as a pilot, a young immigrant finds himself wrestling with his identity when his engine fails and his plane free falls. Based on the true story of Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian college student killed in Portland, OR in 1988 by skinheads in a crime inspired by white supremacist Tom Metzger, A Cow in the Sky is a film about the pain and personal triumph of a son left behind.

An animated short film based on an authentic interview with Olha Ostapenko and her daughter Milana, Ukrainian refugees who survived the first weeks of the war in their native city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine. We recorded this interview in Belgium in April 2022. As I’m writing this in April 2023, the Sumy region is still being shelled.This is an independent production on the intersection of journalism and animation, utilizing the latest generative AI models as a conceptual choice. This approach is aimed at revealing the contrast between technological breakthrough and the anachronism of the Russian invasion, representing a clash of civilization and obscurantism.

Mirroring the stages of loss—denial, depression, bargaining, anger, and acceptance— this animation uses Dice's own words and narration to show the emotional journey of losing one's identity to long term incarceration, with each entry brought to life by a different animator.
