Filmmaker Paul Anton Smith (an editor on Christian Marclay's iconic 24-hour museum piece The Clock) has mined clips from films both well-known and obscure – from The Last Action Hero to Contempt to Roman Holiday to Deep Throat and back again – to create this transcendent cinematic collage that comes together into a meta-narrative about one very unique night out at the movies. We are guided from buying a ticket, to getting our popcorn, selecting our seats, settling in for the trailers, watching the main feature, making out with our dates or bickering with loud patrons, right through to the final curtain and exiting the theater. We are also taken on side trips to arrive with the stars for a big premiere, out to the drive-in, into the projection booth, and backstage to the hidden offices and corridors. An immersive and entrancing feat of editing that sees films from different decades and cultures interacting through the magic of cross-cutting.

Smith's film takes on an extra layer of meaning during this time when we are unable to come together in a darkened room and experience the thrill of moviegoing together in person.

Content warning: This film contains all that cinema can offer and so includes not only moments of wonder but also graphic sex, violence, gore, and (as they say) coarse language. Viewer discretion is advised.
