A regular fixture of The Brattle’s programming over the past 20 years (and beyond) has been Canadian eccentric, Guy Maddin. His curiously entertaining and off-kilter films have often graced our screen either as premieres or in “Recent Raves” series. We hosted BRAND UPON THE BRAIN!, one of Maddin’s most engaging works, for an extended Boston premiere run in the spring of 2007. This supposedly autobiographical film reveals Maddin’s hellish childhood on a remote island, under the hyper-watchful eye of a crazed mother and a diabolically distant scientist-father – proprietors of an underground, mom-and-pop orphanage they operate out of the family lighthouse.
