Grasshoppers are part of Ugandans’ daily diets. Harvesting them in mass quantities is a lucrative, but tricky, business. GRASSHOPPER REPUBLIC follows a team of modern-day prospectors over the course of three harvest seasons, as they push into remote forests to capture the elusive insects via massive generators, chemically-treated light bulbs, corrugated iron traps, and good timing. The film cuts between close-ups of insects in classic nature documentary style, and bustling scenes of the humans preparing to trap them. The eerie soundtrack builds toward the inevitable collision of predator and prey, under the lurid neon lights.
