Taking its title from a poem written in morse code and light, this showcase offers meditations on how we present ourselves—where we come from, who we call family, how we communicate. Some works play with a visual language of omission and distortion while others lay bare their lineage and histories, both approaches ask for understanding and recognition. Using persona, art practice, and movement, these works reveal a poetry of visibility.
A patronizing pamphlet teaching key behaviors for the successful integration of Indonesians into Dutch society (how to clean your house, peel potatoes, dress for a Dutch winter, etc.) is the core material for Jangan Lupa (do not forget). In overwriting its readers' cultural contexts, the document fails to provide guidance about the real challenges that immigrants face, like the compounding traumas of displacement and war, and the difficulty of putting down new roots in a foreign country.
