INTRODUCING CIFF LOVE LETTERS: Valentines day has come early! We’ve thought a lot this year about how we can build connections between audience members and filmmakers within a virtual space. One of the hardest things about this year for filmmakers, is that they have not been able to forge spontaneous connections with audiences and hear from them directly. Considered a staple of Florida tourism, alligator wrestling has been performed by members of the Seminole Tribe for over a century. As the practice has changed over the years, Halpate profiles the hazards and history of the spectacle through the words of the tribe's alligator wrestlers themselves and what it has meant to their people's survival.

Alligator wrestling is a staple of Florida tourism that began as a means of survival by the Seminole and Miccosukee Tribes of Florida. Halpate explores how this technique evolved and its meaning to those who continue to practice it.

The film intends to challenge Africans across the world to reflect on their own lives and revise what ‘they think they know’ about their heritage and subsequently about their True Self and Identity. Proverbs from multiple African languages, including cultural references are incorporated in the film to expound on the significance of our commonalities in values and perceptions which fuels what we envisage as visual art-forms. ALLUMUAH simply put is a love letter to all Africans around the globe, championing the idea of unity for Africa’s dignity, progress and prosperity.

Allumuah

The film stems from the memory of my late Grandmother who went by the name Allumuah [Pronounced: ‘A-Loom-Wah’], meaning ‘leader’ in Nzima. An oral storyteller and great community elder, She was admired by many. Her mere example set the tone on why I came back home to Ghana to create this film set in her hometown in honour of her memory.

In the days leading up to the annual T Ball—an event in which Miami’s black community assembles to model wildly innovative R.I.P. t-shirts and costumes designed to honor their deceased loved ones—three participants are profiled as they prepare and process grief. T is an examination of the will to survive and find joy in psychically draining circumstances. But ultimately, though, T is a visual and sonic Afrofuturist spell of transcendence.

A film crew follows grieving participants of Miami’s annual T Ball, where folks model R.I.P. T-shirts and innovative costumes in honor of their dead.
