INTRODUCING CIFF LOVE LETTERS: Valentines day has come early! We’ve thought a lot this year about how we can build connections between audience members and filmmakers within a virtual space. One of the hardest things about this year for filmmakers, is that they have not been able to forge spontaneous connections with audiences and hear from them directly. If you’ve seen a film you have loved, click HERE to write a love letter to a filmmaker!

Shady River will screen virtually from October 2-12, 2020. This film will be only available to viewers in the United States.

An image of a woman aiming a gun on the Argentinian patagonia develops in front of our eyes. The whir of a scanner unveils in great detail. This woman is pointing at something we cannot see or hear, because the town of Shady River does not allow women to come near their local coal mine. The film unfolds in the ether of absence and silence, with images and sounds of the mines triangulating between music-concréte, radio voice, and interference. These acoustic choices create a sensorial depiction of the culture of machismo predominant in this community, one that is both a ghost and frequency flowing through the thick wintery air. Tatiana Mazú draws the contours of this society with a clever use of archival materials, cartography, and an austere cinematographic language to render a modern history of the town, one which reveals itself slowly through 12 different chapters. Combining militant cinema and experimental flare, this film shakes audiences out of their comfort zones. (MG)
