MATAGI MĀLOHI : STRONG WINDS ﻿The Pacific Climate Warriors, born out of the low-lying Pacific Islands, are an indigenous and youth-led movement that have been on the front lines of climate change for decades—their rally cry is “we are not drowning, we are fighting.” In their own words "Matagi Mālohi tells the story of our journey to uplift our people and shape a narrative that paints us not as victims of the climate crisis but as the leaders, the healers, the nurturers, the artists, the gardeners, the growers, the seafarers and the navigators we are."

THE MYSTERY OF NOW In the short film, THE MYSTERY OF NOW, artist and Apache Skateboards founder, Douglas Miles shares sociopolitical context about the San Carlos Apache Reservation, and the personal history of how and why he started a skateboard brand and developed a team of local youth leaders. His advice on cultivating resilience, creativity, and joy, provides guidance in a time that for many feels uncertain, polarizing and divisive. "It’s no mystery that the history of Native American people in this country has been overlooked, misrepresented and maligned to create a more heroic narrative for settlers to sell books, to sell land, and to sell movie tickets," Douglas shares. "In the middle of this cultural clash, stereotypes and battles for agency, one thing that has never ceased is Native creativity and the making of art. In our creativity we recreate ourselves, and in doing so we create and shape the world around us." In his words, "this film is visual meditation about life on the Apache nation via lived experience of Apache Skateboards. It’s a soulfully joyous glimpse into hard-edged lives of Native kids becoming artists, musicians, skaters, creatives, and leading in their community using art, music and skateboarding as a means of expression and power." "I felt if I could create art that kids could use it would change the way we not only looked at art but would change the way we looked at our community and ourselves," Douglas says. "This film captures the joyous, yet open-eyed worldview that living on the res develops in young people." Director BioThis film is Audrey Buchanan’s directorial debut. Audrey is an interviewer and filmmaker who believes in civic engagement, social justice and the fact that diversity drives innovation. As the founder of a boutique production company called THE WOODS, and a founding board member of NPR Generation Listen, Audrey curates and lifts up diverse voices through intimate interviews, films, digital content and experiential programming. In 2015, Audrey was named one of ORIGIN magazine's top creatives and leaders changing the world, and in 2013, Audrey was named one of GOOD magazine's top 100 innovators and entrepreneurs pushing the world forward.

Director BioTal Amiran is a multiple award winning director and editor based in London, UK.His films have screened at numerous festivals including AFI DOCS, Cinequest, Big Sky Documentary Film festival, Savannah Film Festival and Brooklyn Film Festival, winning Best Documentary Short at several festivals including Sarasota Film festival and London Short Film festival. Amiran’s films have been showcased by Vimeo Staff Pick, Filmmaker Magazine and Nowness as well as being acquired by the BFI National Archive.Amiran is also a lecturer on the Film and Moving Image BA at Norwich University of the Arts, UK.

Director BioOra DeKornfeld is an Emmy-winning video journalist and filmmaker based in Mexico City. Isabel Castro is an Emmy-nominated, award-winning Mexican-American documentary filmmaker. Ora and Isabel have collaborated on projects for the NYTimes, Netflix, Univision and Participant Media. Rooted in a strong journalistic tradition, they're passionate about cinematic nonfiction storytelling.

Director BioJamie Meltzer's feature documentary films have been broadcast nationally on PBS and have screened at numerous film festivals worldwide. Chris Filippone is documentary filmmaker whose work has screened in the Berlinale, Visions du Reel, SXSW, and Hot Docs.

Every weekday, inmates are released from Huntsville State Penitentiary, spending their first moments of freedom with phone calls, cigarettes, and quiet reflection at the Greyhound station up the block.

LOST AND FOUND In the chaos of the world’s largest refugee camp, Kamal Hussein is a beacon of hope. From his small ramshackle hut, and armed only with a microphone, he has taken it upon himself to try and reunite the thousands of Rohingya families who have been torn apart by violence and ethnic cleansing in Myanmar. However, in finding lost family members and bringing them back together, he is not just helping them. He is also finding peace for himself. Director BioOrlando von Einsiedel is the director of the Academy Award-winning short documentary, THE WHITE HELMETS, which follows the lives of a group of heroic Syrian civilian rescue workers in 2016. The film was also nominated for two EMMYs, including one for Exceptional Merit in Documentary Filmmaking. His debut feature documentary VIRUNGA charted the story of a group of courageous park rangers risking their lives to build a better future in the Democratic Republic of Congo. BAFTA and Academy Award-nominated, the documentary won over 50 international awards including an EMMY, a Grierson and a duPont-Columbia Award for outstanding journalism.
