The electro-pop, musical duo, FINKEL, head home to Mackinac Island in the dead of winter to write music for their new album, but will they find inspiration under the mountains of snow and ice? A highly entertaining and musical glimpse into all the things that go into the making of an album
Faced with a rapidly-changing music scene and an uncertain future, electro-pop duo FINKEL leave their home in Los Angeles to embark on a journey to the icy forests of Michigan's famous Mackinac Island.
With her partner and band mate, Brian, this trip returns Jane to her childhood home to revisit the people and places from her past. With its longstanding ban on automobiles and the daily onslaught of extreme winter weather, life for the few who live on the island year round is not easy. FINKEL must embrace this unique lifestyle as they dive headfirst in the creative process once more. Their goal: write an album inspired by this extraordinary place.
Navigating the joys and complexities of returning to a place frozen in the past, Jane and Brian immerse themselves in the sonic landscape of Mackinac and find inspiration for their new body of work.

Our film's entire production team is a total of three individuals. We are all working-class filmmakers, people who care deeply about each other and want each other to succeed. And that’s basically what this documentary is about: how do we pursue art in a connective and enriching way without also going broke? Each crew member has a personal connection to this unusual part of the world. In the process of making this film we stumbled into an experience that helped us learn to love it in unexpected new ways. Something special happens when you travel north into the tundra... We found our time in the harsh Mackinac winter transformed our thinking about these places we call home, and about how they shape where each of us goes from here.
