After the funeral, Faye finds a box of condoms while sorting through her mother's belongings. Driven by curiosity, she discovers chat records between her mother and a tattoo artist named Fei, along with a sketch of a sunflower tattoo. Fuming, she confronts the man, who is seventeen years younger than her mother, thinking the sunflower is a symbol of their love. What she doesn't tell him is that her anger stems from her mother never addressing her as "Fei" (as Fei and Faye pronounce the same in Chinese) like she does with him, but always by her full name. Faye can't reconcile with her deceased mother or her living father. She decides to talk to Fei again, confessing that her resentment towards him stems from her inability to confirm her mother's love for her. Fei reveals that the sunflower was actually drawn by Faye herself when she was a child, and her mother broke up with him to avoid Faye growing up in a broken home as she reconciled with Faye's father. Faye ultimately asks Fei to tattoo the sunflower on her, beneath which is a Mobius strip, and the date of her mother's death coincides with the day she and Fei fell in love. Faye returns home alone to find her father asleep in front of the TV while it plays the wedding video of her parents.
