Three migrants leave home in their teens to embark on a grueling, years-long journey to Spain. Crossing the Sahara Desert by foot, spending months to years living in the forests of Morocco, and finally making the dangerous crossing to the Spanish mainland, their stories have one thing in common: incredible optimism in the face of inconceivable adversity.&nbsp; Using animation and archival footage, the film’s dynamic structure jumps between present day observational footage of life in Spain and reconstructing their migration story. Laz Ayala, a Salvadoran immigrant, recounts his arduous path north on the Pan American Highway with his father and brother where, at any moment, they could have been discovered and turned back — or killed. Laz’s life or death path to U.S. citizenship, which begins in his childhood home of El Salvador, captures a story of struggle, determination, and his mission to humanize immigrants and reform immigration; hope for a brighter future for immigrants and the industries that rely upon them; and hope for our entire country. Shot on three continents with ungarnished commentary from all sides of the issue, Shattering Refuge takes an unflinching look at the role of the media in reframing the act of seeking refuge from a basic human right to a criminalized activity.&nbsp; By deftly weaving the unscripted voices of displaced people, journalists, politicians, and NGO workers into one cohesive narrative, the film explores whether the media is an instigator, observer, or accomplice — and powerfully compels audiences to consider the boundaries imposed upon their own perspectives. Without pandering or being patronizing, Shattering Refuge boldly imagines the way forward, in a world where the very idea of refuge has been shattered and complacency is no longer an option.

Shattering Refuge

An immigrant doctor in rural England fearing deportation lives off grid. While scavenging in the forest, he stumbles upon a body. The man is alive — barely. The doctor takes the stranger back to his cabin to nurse him. When the stranger awakens, a brief conversation reveals their opposing political ideals, pitting them against each other. The stranger voted to leave. The doctor wanted to remain.

Samaritan

Undeterred tells the story of the build up of enforcement along the U.S./Mexico border, how it has affected and changed life in one small town, and how local residents have organized to push back and resist those changes.
