An intimate look at the life and work of a Roma refugee from Kosovo collecting trash on the streets of Novi Sad, Serbia, 'Active (citizen)' is a visual ethnography focused on the material, sensorial and kinaesthetic realities of the protagonist’s work and its political and social significance – the daily activism beyond the scope of public recognition. The film is part of a larger visual project on the ‘invisible activism’ of ethnic minorities and migrants who engage for causes beyond those important for their own community. Such activism is invisible because it happens outside any minority or migrant community structures (typical point of access for researchers and media) and because at times it takes forms which comparing to the activism of those who can afford more grand forms of activism it seems insignificant. The film approaches the question of affordability of social engagement as it is conceptualised by middle-class academics and activists.

For the sake of future generations, And Breathe…challenges us to go back to basics, to pass on and use intergenerational skills that help to prevent climate change through lower consumption and replacement practices to put back what we take out. It’s a film about hope… but that hope rests with us.

Is it true that translation creates the basis for a new commons? If so, how? The video essay How Do Animals and Plants Live? is an inquiry into the forcible eviction and immediate demolition of the self-organized anarchist-supported migrant squat Orfanotrofeio in Thessaloniki, Greece, in July 2016. An on-site interview with a young West African migrant, detailed exploration of the bulldozed ruins of the old orphanage, and performative translations from a Greek-language children's schoolbook (How Do Animals and Plants Live?) that the filmmakers found (amid the rubble when they broke into the site)—these elements are all interwoven with strikingly relevant yet unexpected visuals sparked by questions translated directly from the book. Such visuals pointedly wonder: how is this possible? While extrapolating on the assertion that “no one is illegal,” the essay actively yet unobtrusively demonstrates the continuing viability of such anarchist principles as self-organization, autonomy, solidarity, assembly, and direct action, in relation to ongoing migrant struggles, at an historical moment when the status of the refugee has become a global paradigm.

Australia’s iconic koala is on a shocking plummet towards extinction. Within one decade it has gone from no-listing to vulnerable to endangered and the NSW north coast is on the frontline of the battle to save the species. For 35 years the dedicated volunteers of Friends of the Koala have been rescuing, caring, creating habitat and lobbying for the preservation of this internationally recognized and loved animal. “Every Koala Counts” is an intimate exploration of the inspiring people who have taken a stand to save this species – past and present. It tracks the development of Friends of the Koala from its fledgling start as a group of tree planters, to battles fought to save precious habitat, to the dedicated rescue, hospital and care centre staff caring for sick and injured animals. At the heart of the story are the koalas themselves including the adorable battler Banjo who months after being rescued with infected wounds and covered in ticks, is ready to be released to hopefully father a new generation. This short animation video is for CIF, part of the World Bank and one the world’s largest climate finance mechanisms for developing countries seeking to accelerate climate action. We animated a report from CIF communicating indigenous women as potential champions of climate action solutions. The message highlighted that although indigenous women are often subject to discrimination based on their gender and social status, they play a key role in bringing change to the current global climate crisis.

When Pigs Escape is an independent documentary about the story of Matilda, a pig who escaped from a farm to give birth to her piglets shortly after in a nearby woodland. Following a pressure campaign, the pig family was eventually rescued by Brinsley Animal Rescue and The Surge Sanctuary. The documentary recounts the campaign to save the pig family and follows the new life of Matilda and her babies after being rescued. It is a biographical piece that invites us to look at pigs like we have never seen them before.

When Trees Breathed

9/11's UNSETTLED DUST examines the failure of federal and city officials to tell the truth about air contamination in New York City following the destruction of the Twin Towers and to protect public health. It is the story of the deadly illnesses that resulted from this deception, and of the epic battle fought by 9/11 responders and survivors to pass the James Zadroga Health and Compensation Act. This was achieved on a temporary basis in 2010, permanently in 2015, and finally in 2019, the Victims Compensation Fund was extended until 2090. While the story 9/11's UNSETTLED DUST tells is tragic, it reveals the immense courage and generosity of tens of thousands of Americans and undocumented immigrant workers who came together at Ground Zero on behalf of the common good, and later, waged a powerful grassroots campaign for health care legislation benefiting 9/11 responders and survivors.
