As Edwards tries to convince Perez to join him on a strike against extremely low wages, Perez is faced with the dilemma of delivering the news to his distraught mate that he has been offered a promising position. New revelations are made as they talk about the injustices of the prison system that perpetuate modern day slavery.

Inside/Out: A Prison Memoir

A video goes viral, showing a white police officer in South Carolina pull a Black teenager from her school desk and throw her across the floor. Healer-Activist Vivian Anderson uproots her life in New York City to move to South Carolina to support the girl and dismantle the system behind the assault at Spring Valley, including facing the police officer. Adding context, geographer Janae Davis treks the surrounding swamps and encounters the homes of formerly enslaved people of African descent, connecting the past to the present.

On These Grounds

Children in the state of Tennessee can be sentenced to a 60 year life sentence with the minimum sentence being 51 years which is the harshest sentence for children in the country. These young people are known as Juvenile Lifers. Tennessee has been prosecuting young people under the age of 18 with this law since 1995. A majority of the incarcerated population including 77% of the juvenile lifers in Tennessee are known as black/African American, in a state where they represent only 17% of the population. The disproportionate rates of incarceration have been widely viewed as a continuation of Tennessee’s legacy of slavery and racism. Currently, the Tennessee Supreme Court is considering a case that will decide if sentencing a child to a 60 year life sentence is unconstitutional. In our documentary, we look at the case and circumstances of Quinton Sanders to understand not only the Juvenile Life law but the human impact on these children, their families and the socio economic inequities and trauma that continue to impact these same communities today

Follow two acclaimed musicians who are determined to use their talents to advocate for social justice. Allen Otte and John Lane tour the country with their performance of The Innocents - a piece created to shine a spotlight on the growing problem of wrongful convictions in the United States. Using a variety of found-object and home-made instruments, electronic soundscapes, and spoken texts, the performer-composers endeavor to explore various aspects of the issues surrounding wrongful imprisonment and exoneration in the American criminal justice system: mistaken identity, incarceration, injustice, politics, psychology, and resilience. The film culminates with a performance attended by Anna Vasquez - an exoneree, who spent 13 years in a Texas prison system for a crime which never happened.

The Innocents

UNGUARDED takes us inside the walls of APAC, the revolutionary Brazilian prison system centered on the full recovery and rehabilitation of the person. Beginning in 1972, APAC founder Dr. Mario Ottoboni volunteered in some of Brazil's worst prisons. Seeing men and women frequently return to a life of crime once they left prison, Dr. Ottoboni decided to found his own restorative justice-based system. The results have been extraordinary: while the crime rate and recidivism rates have continued to increase in Brazil's public prisons, within the APAC (Association for the Protection and Assistance of Convicts) system they have steadily decreased. UNGUARDED explores the unique method behind this system, now present in twenty three countries across four continents. Observing the daily lives of the "recuperandos" (recovering inmates) who live and work there, we see firsthand why—as one inmate puts it—"no one escapes from love."
