Zhengmin, a young "North defector", narrowly escaped the gunfire of the Korean border guards, sneaked into Xiulian's house, a villager who had just lost his daughter, and was kindly taken in. Zhengmin met MINXIU of the same age in the village through a ball. They gradually became friends. On the day they got to know each other, the vicious murder of the "North defector" occurred, and the whole region began to hunt down the "North defector", The village head inquired about the news and began to search Zhengmin door to door. Xiulian and MINXIU tried to help Zhengmin escape, but they accidentally exposed Zhengmin's whereabouts. By the Tumen River, they finally gathered here with different purposes, but all stopped suddenly under the sound of a gun……

9/11's UNSETTLED DUST examines the failure of federal and city officials to tell the truth about air contamination in New York City following the destruction of the Twin Towers and to protect public health. It is the story of the deadly illnesses that resulted from this deception, and of the epic battle fought by 9/11 responders and survivors to pass the James Zadroga Health and Compensation Act. This was achieved on a temporary basis in 2010, permanently in 2015, and finally in 2019, the Victims Compensation Fund was extended until 2090. While the story 9/11's UNSETTLED DUST tells is tragic, it reveals the immense courage and generosity of tens of thousands of Americans and undocumented immigrant workers who came together at Ground Zero on behalf of the common good, and later, waged a powerful grassroots campaign for health care legislation benefiting 9/11 responders and survivors.

African Americans have participated in the United States Armed Forces since the Revolutionary War. While doing so they endured not only the troubles of engaging an external enemy but also the harsh realities of racism and segregation. Still, in times of war, African Americans were expected to serve their country faithfully, despite not having the same rights as their white counterparts. After both wars, many veterans returned home to be beaten, humiliated, and lynched (often still in uniform). All the while still being denied the rights of full citizenship. Refusing to submit to Jim Crow America, veterans used their organizational skills and began to coordinate an attack on segregation in America.

Behind The Loom

Living in the Story explores three photographic series dealing with immigration/internment and nuclear issues by distinguished photographic artist Patrick Ryoichi Nagatani. These issues are particularly relevant today, in light of escalating threats of war, toxic pollution and a growing refugee population worldwide. Nagatani was one of the most brilliant photographic artists of our era. In the late 1970s, he pioneered the Contemporary Constructed Photographic Movement in Los Angeles, developing a new visual vocabulary by constructing tableau photographs from sets, sculptures, models, and paintings. The film portrays an artist deeply concerned and well informed about world events who uses imagery, storytelling and narrative fiction to raise awareness about modern anxieties, with an emphasis on the threat of nuclear weapons technology and government policies that foment fear of immigrants and minorities. Despite the serious content of his subject matter, his innovative images are compelling and entertaining. An engaging raconteur and teacher, Nagatani talks in the film about his projects, his unorthodox photographic techniques, and his subtle weaving together of fiction and fact. Scott Nagatani’s hauntingly beautiful music score provides the film’s soundtrack.

Living In The Story – Short Version

The film is set in Damascus in spring 2013. Husam is an ordinary Syrian soldier who visits his Family in Damascus on a 24hr leave. He sits in the kitchen and after a long absence enjoys the company and food of his mother, but there is a lump in his throat. He would like to open his heart for his mother and tell her what he really feels: That he is fighting for a group of corrupt and criminal people. He wants to say to her that he is afraid of death and he wants to escape military service, but his mother insists on describing him as the hero who is fighting for his country and his family honor. Both characters have an intense inner struggle that forces them to show the opposite of what they actually feel. Husam tries in many ways to tell his mother how dangerous the current situation on the front is, but his mother ignores his fears. She asks him to help her and bring the old television from the attic. There he finds an old plastic toy which intensifies his awareness to his tragic situation.

Her moving story is told through the lens of her growing friendship with a second generation survivor, Mitchie Takeuchi. Setsuko Thurlow devoted her entire life to demanding a nuclear-free world. Culminating with Thurlow’s acceptance speech at the 2017 Nobel Peace Awards, this documentary explores Thurlow’s life and work, as well as her evolving friendship with director Mitchie Takeuchi, a second-generation survivor. In telling Thurlow’s story, Takeuchi breaks her own family’s silence about the devastating nuclear attacks.
