THAT HIGHER LEVEL (Feature Film)

Synopsis: “That Higher Level” follows the 100 musicians who make up the National Youth Orchestra of Canada over the course of two months of training for a 12-city cross-country tour. Embedded with the orchestra throughout, filmmaker John Bolton weaves together footage that captures what it means to be an “Olympian” in this rarified world. The coaches are the highest level – principals and section leaders from the top orchestras in the country train the young would-be maestros on the trickiest parts of the repertory. Can they tackle the masterpiece “Death and Transfiguration” – do they have the depth of feeling and the technical “chops” for such young artists? Going from 90% of the time practice room, can they be “on” at peak performance on a 26-day tour? Dealing with roommates and high-performance level drama. Individual artists coming together to sound as one. And then there is always the oboist in the weeds with her reeds.
