Arriving in a new town with his dad, an astrophysicist, Jim a gifted 11-year-old boy has to participate in a young scientist competition with his new classmate Emma. Emma would like to keep things simple, something with a cute hamster, maybe? But Jim convinces her to use real science and secretly build a real hot air balloon capaple of going to space recreating Joseph Kittinger’s death-defying helium balloon jump. The thrill of it brings them closer together but they both are keeping secrets. Neither is simply interested in winning a competition. The project actually holds deeper personal meaning for both. When the truth comes out during a failed attempt they will face consequences and will have decide whether to trust each other and resume their high-flying pursuit. If they try it again will they make it this time or will their parents bring them right back down to earth?
