A boy narrates the time when his mother tells him they must move to a new place since she barely makes ends meet in their hometown. Unwilling to leave, the boy finds comfort in the local animals and makes friends with a porpoise in the river. When his mother learns of his new friend, she decides against moving so her son can foster his friendships. Neither realize the negative consequences of clinging to the status quo and must learn how it effects even the ecosystem around them.
