Jazz is a true art form that often provides an instrumental piece to be interpreted by the audience. While most music documentaries share the lifestyle of being a musician, IN THE SAME DIRECTION chooses to explore the entire process of creating a jazz album. While attending a school field trip to the local bowling alley, a young girl runs into her absent father (Matt Jones, BREAKING BAD). Although the two never see each other, the young girl is happy to spend some time with her dad. They bowl, talk, and eat lunch together, but something feelsoff, and before the day is over she is forced to grow up when she realizes that her father may never be the dad she wishes he would be. Director Heather Edwards pulls from her personal history to craft a touching story revealing the difficulties in having relationships. The film features original music recorded in 1972 by her father that was recently uncovered.

A Nigerian immigrant, when Kosi moved to Canada at age 14, her transition to the country brought immense culture shock, loneliness, and loss of identity. For many tourists and immigrants, the USA still represents a land of opportunity where dreams come to life. And yet, the reality doesn’t always live up to these blissful expectations. A Japanese trumpet player flies to New York City for an orchestra performance. With little to no knowledge of English, he finds himself lost and ends up having a hellish night in Brooklyn. TRUMPET is a beautifully surreal, fish-out-of-water odyssey that culminates in a wonderful jazz trumpet performance by actor, and professional trumpet player, Mao Soné.

In this documentary by award-winning director and producer James Keach, we ride with Linda Ronstadt, musician Jackson Browne, and a busload of Cenzontles (mockingbirds) from Arizona to the little town of Banámichi in Sonora, Mexico, where Ronstadt's grandfather was born. On the way, we learn of Ronstadt's long friendship with Eugene Rodriguez, a third-generation Mexican-American musician who founded the Cenzontles 30 years ago to reconnect working-class kids with the dignity and beauty of their ancestral music and culture. The film explodes with rhythm — the pounding feet of zapateado dancers, the strumming of jarana and guitar, the clacking buzz of the quijada, a donkey jawbone, and swells with soulful voices. It's a journey of pride and self-knowledge with a solid rootsy groove. This incredible film shows that young people, who learn from their elders and add their own spirit and soul, can bring forth new flowers from ancient roots.
