Kelley Lee is a 60-year-old mother, wife, Ph.D., university professor, and hockey player. To Kelley, hockey is more than a hobby; it's her passion. The upcoming Canada 55+ Games in Kamloops is a milestone for Kelley as she prepares to compete at a national level. Kelley and her teammates have encountered many obstacles to getting on the ice. Their years of being physically able to play hockey are becoming numbered. Kelley reflects on her hockey career and the racial and gender barriers she has faced in a male-dominated sport. In OVERTIME, a young filmmaker documents her mother's journey. They explore what it means to be a Chinese-Canadian woman in hockey and reflect on how the sport has shaped their relationship. This documentary celebrates Kelley’s passion and fight to play the sport she loves. House music is widely recognized in popular culture, though its roots tend to be overlooked. Legendary House dancer Future shares stories of his decades-long experience in the sub-culture. His journey from dancer to teacher is achieved through his mentorship with Edmonton House dancer Sekou Sonko-Boisclair. Together, they weave a wonderful mosaic of body movements alongside thumping house beats. The pair, tagging in and out during the invigorating dance sequences, is a sight to behold. A beautiful and poetic sharing of information between generations, almost a passing of the torch to ensure that the culture lives on. Legendary New York House dancer Future develops a special teacher-student bond with Edmonton House dancer Sekou Sonko-Boisclair.

When Don 'Tex' Phillips, a trailblazing Black American basketball coach, takes the reins of a Canadian college program on the prairies, he and his NAIT Ooks team become the subject of sabotage and scrutiny on their way to back-to-back championships, before his premature exit as head coach. Filmmaker Alex Eskandarkhah is a Canadian-Iranian director, producer and actor born and raised in Toronto. He works diligently to create a space for underrepresented narratives through authentic storytelling that captures omitted histories and lived experiences. <a href="https://ciff2023.eventive.org/schedule/64ee6853ad246000675d70d8" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">COACHING WHILE BLACK will be screened as a part of the SHORTS: BACK IN THE GAME package.</a> ﻿Director Alex Eskandarkhah &amp; Subject Donald Phillips will be in attendance at the September 24 screening.
