A Black Springs Homecoming: Finding History is a 26-minute documentary produced by Nevada Humanities that tells the story of a small Nevada neighborhood and the ability of its residents to establish an enduring sense of community in the face of widespread racial discrimination and economic hardship. Located in the North Valleys several miles north of Reno, Nevada, the tiny community of Black Springs was named in the 19th century for a nearby water source. In 1948, a Reno realtor and insurance agent named J.E. Sweatt purchased land in the area and began to sell parcels to Black families who were having trouble finding property in Reno. As in other municipalities nationwide, private developers had imposed restrictive racial covenants on many of the housing tracts established from the 1920’s onward that explicitly prohibited people of color from living there. The families who moved to Black Springs were determined to transform this inhospitable landscape into a home despite its lack of paved roads, water or sewage service, and other basic infrastructure. In A Black Springs Homecoming, current and former residents of Black Springs recall how the community worked together in the 1960’s and 1970’s to secure their own volunteer fire department, reliable water service, a community center and park, and more. Together with community partners, they describe ongoing efforts to strengthen the neighborhood’s identity and preserve its story for future generations.

A Black Springs Homecoming: Finding History tells the story of a tight-knit Black community in Black Springs, Nevada, and their struggle to secure basic infrastructure amid rampant discrimination and economic hardship, while highlighting their ongoing efforts to preserve the story of their challenges and achievements for future generations.

What if we went on a hike, but the purpose of reaching the destination was not to see a beautiful landscape, but to hear a beautiful soundscape? As a sound recordist, I started noticing natural soundscapes - where the land was quiet, and how rare it is to find a truly quiet place in nature. A sound map created by the National Park Service showed that my adopted state of Nevada is really quiet. So, I went on a journey to find out for myself. Nature always has a surprise for you.

For 40 years, the “Keghead” has delivered beer to Reno's oldest bars and restaurants. That ride comes to an end when he is taken off his route and moved to sales. A man who thrives on hard work and relationships he’s built along his route, trades in steel-toed boots for slacks and a tablet, as his company shifts to an Amazon sales model: order online, delivery at your door, no human contact. Told through the eyes of a son and his blue-collared dad, Keghead’s Last Ride explores identity and community, capturing a man and a city in transition.

Now with robots and artificial intelligence, battles are waged continents away and the decision whether to kill or let live is increasingly out of human hands. BATTLES BEYOND THE HORIZON is set in the Nevada desert and follows activists headed to Creech Air Force Base near Las Vegas where they will face arrest and ultimately be tried for their actions. The film weaves this narrative with the history of the U.S. drone program as we march forward into a world where eventually artificial intelligence may make the decision to kill and robots will carry out those orders without humans.

With robots and artificial intelligence wars are waged continents away and the decision whether to kill or let live is increasingly out of human hands.
