“Have you ever grieved for someone who hasn’t died?” Over a five-year period, Pepa Lubojacki documents the lives of four family members, and mainly her brother David, who is chronically homeless and alcoholic. Using a highly personal, diary-like collage, she attempts to lay bare the roots of intergenerational misfortune in her family. Her hybrid memoir approach combines emotional directness with formal experimentation. Lubojacki records David as he drifts around the streets and the periphery of Prague, their home city. We watch a restless drifter as he becomes drunk, leaves his makeshift dwellings, gets temporarily sober, finds accommodation, loses it, returns to drink, and receives a nearly unconditional stream of support – material, financial, emotional – from his sister, who diligently films their interactions. Without sentimentality, in the spirit of a DIY aesthetic and with a spectacular and playful use of AI, this film explores the causes and consequences of addiction and asks where love ends and control begins, and what respect truly means: to save someone, or to let them go?

Winner of the Berlinale Documentary Award and Caligari Film Award at the 2026 Berlinale and Czech candidate for the Oscars.
