Mima has grown up without her father, under the strict care of her mother, Boyka. When news of his death arrives and his body is returned to their village after many years, even those who knew him are no longer sure that they can recognise him. His return puts Mima and Boyka in a situation that neither of them expected to face. Boyka refuses to see the man she once loved, leaving Mima to face the situation alone. As the pressure grows, mother and daughter are drawn into a confrontation that neither is prepared for. My Father’s Shoes is a contemporary drama set in a rural village. Shot on location, the film uses a naturalistic visual style and an intimate approach to its characters and their surroundings. The cast combines professional and non-professional actors, and the story unfolds through restrained performances, sparse dialogue and close observation of everyday life. The film’s quiet, observational approach puts particular focus on the rhythms of the village and the relationships between its inhabitants. The film premiered at the San Sebastian FF in September this year.
