Tonina, a woman in her sixties, has always taken it upon herself to look after her family. She runs an accounting firm with her husband, cares for her elderly mother and worries obsessively about her unemployed nephew Ivan. Tonina feels responsible for the whole family, always concerned, fussy, and eager to offer unwanted opinions and advice. When she secretly buys the remaining floor of a house on the popular island of Hvar behind her younger sister Tajana’s back, long-simmering tensions begin to surface.
Set in Split and Hvar, Igor Jelinović’s debut feature observes a family from a distance, gradually revealing the fragile bonds, unspoken grievances and buried secrets beneath their everyday interactions. With its carefully composed long takes, off-centre framing and understated humour arising from the messy family dynamics and the sunny Adriatic holiday backdrop, Honey Bunny turns a seemingly ordinary property dispute into a sharp, quietly unsettling psychological portrait of a family, anchored by Snježana Sinovčić-Šiškov’s outstanding central performance.
After its world premiere at IFF Rotterdam, Honey Bunny won four awards at Pula FF, including Best Film, as well as prizes at other festivals.
