Two single-parent divorcees try their hand at getting married - again. They have no idea how wrong they're doing it.
Director's Biography:
Taylor Olson (he/ him) is a Canadian Screen Award nominated filmmaker, and actor in Mi’kma’ki/ Nova Scotia. He has directed over seven short films, many of them award-winning, and - alongside partner Koumbie - won Season 10 of CBC’s Short Film Faceoff for the coming-of-age drama Hustle & Heart.
His first feature film - Bone Cage - has been released to critical acclaim; sweeping the awards at the FIN Atlantic International Film Festival and numerous other festivals. It has appeared in competition at Poland’s Camerimage, where it was nominated for Best Cinematographer’s Debut and had its US debut in January 2021, with eight more US festivals lined up including Cinequest Film Festival. Bone Cage was recently nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards for Adapted Screenplay & Supporting Actress. Taylor is the recipient of the 2020 Arts Nova Scotia Emerging Artist Award.
Director's Statement:
Second Wedding was inspired by a shared fascination with awkward and odd weddings of every kind between myself and writing partner, Bob Mann. He'd once attended a wedding where the couple sang to each other during the ceremony while playing ukuleles, another where the bridal party performed a choreographed entrance that lasted well over twenty minutes, and another that featured the bride giving the groom a lap dance at the reception. We felt that there’s something beautiful hidden in cringeworthy moments. It’s as if you get to see hints of love’s true personality when others are asked to witness something that’s so awkward, its logic could only exist in that special space between two people who are so in love they just can’t think straight. Inspired by filmmakers like Yorgos Lanthimos, Taika Waititi, and Wes Anderson the visual style matches the words by creating awkward, claustrophobic frames through close ups and then extreme wides on wildly wide lenses. Stiff, awkward, performative, this wedding is all about love for the second time.
