Director's Biography: Quebec City filmmaker and philosophy teacher Alexandre Isabelle envisions his short films as aphorisms. Through their poetry, he seeks to inspire existential reflections. His short The Sugaring Off, which has earned him the most accolades yet, convinced him to establish his own production company, Silène Films, in order to create more works in line with his artistic vision. In 2021, he will release his newest film, Therefore, Socrates Is Mortal.

In this award-winning film, Sofia, a superwoman in a man’s world, a marketing specialist is trapped in an episode of her stressful daily life, overlooking herself until she hits a wall. The film sets up a parallel between Sofia’s life and the climate change problems, initiated through the denial of her soul for the benefit of our mass consumption society. Director's Statement: The release of An Inconvenient Truth, a documentary on Al Gore’s campaign to educate people about global warming, brought the subject of climate change to a worldwide awareness in 2006. However, despite the gravity of the situation, few concrete actions made it possible to reach the goals set by the world climate organizations to solve the situation. Having lived in Europe, I was surprised to witness that things didn’t change much through the years when I returned home in Montreal: intense traffic, bridges blocked during peak hours, increased presence of energy-consuming vehicles, etc. More than ten years later, a majority of the population continues to live the capitalist dream as if everything will be fine; but we know it won’t, do we? Why this denial? How is it possible?These reflections initiated the birth of this project. This is the reality of Sofia’s life. A young and ambitious professional who carries on her shoulders the weight of a big company she works for, who ignores her own needs and seems to have no life, nor time to take an interest in the life around her. Is this the price to pay for her success? Le choix de Sofia is the choice Sofia makes and also a choice she cannot make. It is a look at a society that promotes the denial of being for the benefit of short-term economical values. The tone of the film is both realistic and ironical, with a touch of humor. This twelve minutes short-film aims to immerse the audience in the heart of a reality that most people don’t perceive, establishing a parallel between Sofia’s life and the destruction of our planet. Beyond the main theme, I was interested in the challenge of bringing the audience to be interested in an isolated woman who holds back her emotions, until the point where her nature can’t take the backseat anymore. This quest for being is that of every person who seeks for the truth in the depths of his soul.

LE CHOIX DE SOFIA (ONE LAST THING)

Louise works as a human resources advisor. She operates in a tense work environment in which power dynamics take many forms. Trying to manage a conflict between the interests of the company and those of the employees, Louise will be confronted with various means of pressure oscillating between contempt and violence. Her choice will have serious repercussions. Director's Biography: Julien G. Marcotte is a screenwriter and director living in Montreal. He graduated from the University of Montreal in 2018. Louise from 9 to 5 is his first short film. His second, Les mains sales, financed through SODEC's Emerging Creation Program, is currently in pre-production. Director's Statement: The story of Louise from 9 to 5 is directly inspired by events experienced by my mother while she was working as a human resources consultant. It was the desire to pay her tribute, as well as to address the pressures and suffering related to work conflicts that motivated my approach. This subject is declined in two paradigms. First of all, the modern company whose main values, performance and efficiency, contribute to the development of a competitive environment with perverse effects on the employees. A vicious circle is set in motion. In order to benefit from the advantages granted by their superior, they find themselves obliged to establish their authority over their subordinates and to maintain unhealthy power relationships with their counterparts. Secondly, the sometimes complex and discriminatory relationships between male and female colleagues. As a victim of the circumstances of such a work environment, a chauvinistic worker has the necessary pretext to use violence to obtain favours from a woman considered subversive. In short, I wanted to stage a multi-faceted conflict whose only moral outcome was withdrawal.

LOUISE DE 9 À 5 (LOUISE FROM 9 TO 5)

Myrtle, a trailer park mom from Indiana, cooks dinner for her son. But something’s not quite right. This kitchen is anonymous, industrial, and Myrtle’s working to a deadline. As her composure unravels, it is realized that 21 grams is all that separates life from death. Director's Biography: Patricia was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland and trained as an Actress at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh. Previous acting credits include ‘Pit’ at The Traverse Theatre, 'Lost At Sea' Finborough Theatre, The Field Of Blood 2 (BBC1), River City (BBC Scotland). She has featured in several Afternoon Play's on BBC Radio 4 and appeared in long-running series McLevy starring Brian Cox. She is also an accomplished voice-over artist. For the last few years, she has worked in Advertising, whilst developing several film projects. This is Patricia's directorial debut. Director's Statement: MYRTLE is an adaptation of a play that Megan Barker and I worked on. I broached the idea of developing it into a film as I loved the premise and thought it had real dramatic potential. We felt it important to keep the audience in the dark initially, as to where we are and why Myrtle is preparing this meal, in order for the final moments to (hopefully) have a stronger impact. It was essential for the kitchen to be as much of a character in the film, cold and intimidating as this adds to Myrtle's disorientation. There is a back story weaved in, the memory of a murder, the intention being to write a feature film, where we will revisit the clues in MYRTLE and reveal what actually took place. To me, Myrtle is a character that asks for love and understanding, possibly in spite of herself and I like people like that, my hope with this film is that the audience will have compassion for her in the end. The main themes being, the brutalising effect of poverty, the deprivation of choice and a mother's unconditional love.
