A tragicomedy about a young Latvian man Ansis with simple dreams; to marry the free-spirited and beautiful daughter (Zisza) of a local Jewish merchant and to pursue a career as an artist while supporting himself as a sign painter. Political events intervene as brutal regimes come and go, Ansis’ country, village, people, and even his heart are swept up in the inexorable currents of history.
