In this delightful documentary/personal discovery film,&nbsp;A More Radiant Sphere&nbsp;follows the long-lost story of Communist poet, activist and Canadian political prisoner Joe Wallace, bringing him to life through archival material, both real and imagined. This hybrid film weaves together the story of Wallace, the Canadian Communist Party, and the filmmaker’s own surprising discovery of her relation to Wallace, despite a distant relationship with her father (Joe’s great-nephew). Segmented throughout are stunning folk songs based on Wallace’s writings, performed by award-winning folk musician Simone Schmidt, aka Fiver. The film delves into the limits of history and its records, and how their re-imagining creates new political and personal truths.

After numerous unsuccessful interviews, the lively but clumsy young woman finds herself under a great deal of social pressure and fears losing her home. A young woman discovers the working class history of her neighbourhood through the lens of a 1965 Canon Scoopic 16mm camera and historical figures via Boston’s public art. She begins an important conversation that needs to continue in the labour movement given the overwhelming right wing ideology and misinformation being spread targeting working class folks. The film title comes from an 1857 Frederick Douglass speech: “If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”

An intimate film showing the life of a migrant worker in their homeland of Guatemala. Farm worker Pablo Nimamac has worked five to seven months a year on a vegetable farm in Quebec since 2008. The rest of the year, he runs his family’s strawberry farm in Guatemala, which he has been able to expand with the fruits of his labour abroad. Proud of his Mayan Kaqchikel origins, Pablo welcomes us to his home, introduces us to the family he leaves behind year after year and tells us what it means for him to share his life between Guatemala and Canada. “If I wasn’t an opera singer, would I be a trans man?” asks Teiya Kasahara, a gender non-binary singer, partway through the film. It’s a dilemma facing gender non-binary and trans singers working in a field whose roles are rigidly defined along gender lines: sopranos and mezzos are cast as women (so-called “trouser roles” aside); tenors and basses as men. When factories were forced to close operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, an ophthalmic lens workers’ union ensured mechanisms to protect their workers, with the ultimate goal of changing the culture of labour in their factory. The documentary brings to focus what is essential to keep a country running in times of crisis. While the pandemic turned the spotlight on essential and frontline workers, what was essential to the workers of Optodev was their union. Subtitled in ENGLISH

In 1970, a radioactive leak in the Spanish Nuclear Energy Board contaminated the Manzanares river and the surrounding areas of the city of Madrid. 50 years later, workers and neighbours in the vicinity of the centre are fighting against something more terrible and harmful than the radiation: the total indifference of Spanish society. This film includes many interviews with workers and community members. It’s a compelling story and has the themes of health and safety, environmental protection, business trumping the health and wellbeing of citizens, and international solidarity. Subtitled in ENGLISH

This film tells the story of three Indonesian women redefining their destinies. SUTRINGAH, is the wife of a palm sugar tapper and faces economic hardship when her husband is paralyzed due to a workplace accident. Sutringah reevaluates her role as a woman, a wife and a breadwinner. YATI, a woman with a disability, worked all her life for her family’s business. Her idealism conflicts with her father’s traditional views of the business. She tries forging her own path by taking a job at a garment factory where new limits are imposed on her. MARIA, is a member of a group of widows who work as traditional weavers. When they become competitive with male dominated retailers, they are forced to redefine their work by passing along the weaving tradition to their local youth. Subtitled in ENGLISH

This fictional film follows Alberto as he navigates a world not set-up to accommodate him. He undertakes his day-to-day with much effort, and is often met with discomfort, annoyance, and sometimes hostility. This film portrays a fictionalization of living and working with a functional disability. It’s charming and effective in communicating daily struggles of workers who face barriers to full workplace participation. It’s also a reminder that anyone could have an “umbrella.” Film is subtitled in ENGLISH

Have you ever considered the amount of work it takes to immigrate to Canada? Applying to immigrate is a form of labour: it requires time, effort, intention, skill and money. This film about immigration application work tells the stories of Martha, Winnie and Stella. As prospective immigrants to Canada, they are tagged as being “abnormal” (to use the state’s term) through the immigration medical examination and therefore face higher barriers and discrimination during the immigration process. Themes include the criminalization of HIV, and a critical look at the idea of “good immigrants.”

An important, first-person film telling the stories of Innu and their culture, their work, and the immediate impacts of environmental degradation on their lands. Themes of Indigenous learning, work and way of life. From the Innu nation and residing in the Tiohtià:ke territory since 2006, Elie-John Joseph has been passionate about cinema since a young age. Self-taught, he has been practising film photography for several years.
