Pour devenir guide de haute montagne, de nouveaux candidats entrent chaque année à l'ENSA, l'Ecole nationale de ski et d'alpinisme située à Chamonix. En quatre ans de formation, ils vont associer leur passion pour la montagne à l'engagement de prendre des clients sur leur corde. Leurs aînés, guides « de père en fils » ou « extérieurs à la vallée », témoignent de l'évolution de ce métier. Prenant appui sur l'aventure humaine de leurs prédécesseurs, ce documentaire accompagne les jeunes futurs guides dans les joies et les doutes qui font d'eux, à leur tour, des hommes sur la montagne avec cette flamme dévorante et fragile qui anime leur désir d'altitude. To become mountain guides, new candidates enroll every year in the national academy of skiing and mountain climbing at Chamonix, France. In four years of training, they are going to blend their passion for climbing with the responsibility for taking people up on the cord. Their elders, guides "father to son", or "strangers to the valley" bear witness to how the profession has evolved. Stressing the human adventure of their predecessors, this documentary film goes right along with these young future guides, sharing their joys and doubts, that make them, in their turn, men of the mountain, with that devouring, fragile flame that drives them ever higher.
