Germany is considered the world champion of opera. From The Magic Flute to Madama Butterfly, the classics are performed repeatedly in German opera houses. Yet, the average age of the audience keeps rising. Why is this? Why does the younger generation find it increasingly difficult to connect with the classics, and how can a bridge be built?

The documentary "People shouting at Each Other – Opera and the Present" addresses these questions in collaboration with the Wuppertaler Bühnen. It strips opera of its mask and takes a look behind the scenes.

To do this, soprano Margaux de Valensart and dancer Sarah Katharina Becher guide us into the world of Alcina, an opera reimagined. Modern dance, a reinterpreted storyline, and costumes that embrace both past and present.

The two young directors, Leonie Hackländer and Isabelle Schmidt, provide insight into various perspectives on opera and shed light on the emotional challenges of the artistic profession.

In the end, not only they, but also we are left with the questions: What can opera be? And what is it?

The premiere of the documentary will take place on August 24, 2024, at 7:00 PM in Room 2, Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 143e in Wuppertal.
