They work with and are a member of the disabled, neurodiverse, 2SLGBTQ+ and contemporary dance communities in Toronto.&nbsp; Their first film ‘Contested Landscapes’ is a commentary on urban development within the protected land of the Oak Ridges Moraine and won an Audience Choice Award at the Contact Dance International Film Festival (CDIFF) in 2017. The following film ‘bacK’ is a personal story of power imbalances on-and-off of the dance floor, ‘Parcon Resilience’ is an introduction to a somatic movement practice that is IBPOC centered and ‘Climate Strike Contact’ illustrates a variety of ways to protest climate injustice including the embodied dance practice of Contact Improvisation.&nbsp; They screened and released their first feature length film ‘Dovercourt House: a Home for Dance’ in 2021. This documentary contains nearly 30 interviews from the contemporary and social dance communities that consider this building to be their second home. ‘The Toronto Contact Improvisation Community’ features dance origin stories from 8 dancers and won both the Gold Award and the Audience Choice Award at CDIFF in 2023.&nbsp; Their most recent short film ‘be.yond’ introduces&nbsp;dance artist and activist&nbsp;Frank Hull, who lives proudly with Cerebral Palsy and Madness, embraces his&nbsp;Mi'kmaq heritage and celebrates his gay identity. The focus of their next film that they are currently working on will be a more in depth look at Frank’s dance artistry, choreography with dancers who have complex disabilities and his point of view on disability, diversity and beauty.

In 2007, she collaborated with the iconic Yoko Ono, showcasing her talent as both dancer and choreographer at the Centre A. Relocating to Toronto in 2008, Hanna's choreographic prowess has continued to shine through her work with renowned institutions like Rosedale Heights School of the Arts, George Brown Dance, and The National Ballet of Canada. In 2012, she clinched victory in Northwest Dance Project's 'Pretty Creatives' international choreographic competition, further solidifying her status as a prominent figure in the dance world. Bringing the principles of contact improvisation into dialogue with tango not only increases tango’s creative range in terms of body shapes, embrace, and vocabulary, but it interrupts tango’s gendered lead/follow binary. The roles of leader and follower are exchanged so frequently and fluidly that the border between the two roles starts to dissolve. It is an inside look that shows the treasures that it possesses. It is rediscovery and acknowledgment. Is the empowerment of the body, of everything that builds it over time and a way to honor it. It is constant movement, wisdom and experience.Dance film resulted from a creative process and body lab of the work with seniors and elderly people in vulnerable nursing homes in marginalized zones in Hermosillo, Sonora, México. This project begins with the body as a starting point to explore all physiological and emotional possibilities of the elder participants. More than 100 elders participated in this project and many of them star in this dance film. In this process the main objective was to reconnect with their body as a container, to find the way to empower themselves through movement and to honor their body embracing all the living experience through their lives. Exploring the social awkwardness of grief, and inspired by the writing of Anton Chekhov, the project gathers current and former artists of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, as well as the Grotowski Institute-based physical theater company Teatr ZAR, as a reflection on the lineages of Polish Jerzy Grotowski and German Pina Bausch, their relationship and how their work resonates today. This particular piece features original company member and longtime collaborator of Pina Bausch, Josephine Ann Endicott, in poignant solo about aging, the passage of time, and nostalgia. From 2021 - 2023 Samantha was a Guest Artist &amp; Researcher at Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, where she began as a Fulbright Scholar in 2021. During that time she created and launched numerous projects, some of which are still in development.Samantha’s theatrical work has been produced at The Grotowski Institute, the Theatre Olympics, RedCat, HERE Arts (New York), Tjarnarbio (Iceland), LungA (Iceland), and the Edinburgh International Fringe. As a filmmaker, she has made ambitious music videos for KÁRYYN, JFDR, Sóley, Mariee Siou, and Katie Gately, among others. Katie Gately’s Waltz, directed by Shay and starring dancer Bobbi Jene Smith was an international success, playing numerous festivals, including BAFTA and Academy Award qualifying HollyShorts and CineQuest.In 2016 her original piece, ‘of Light’, gained international attention when it was developed under the mentorship of Marina Abramović , endorsed by Abramović and praised by Björk in The Guardian. Two songs from the original score were released by Mute Records via composer KÁRYYN, with ‘Moving Masses’ named as Best New Track on Pitchfork.From 2017-2019 Samantha’s original piece made in collaboration with The Grotowski Institute and Nini Julia Bang, ‘A Thousand Tongues’ toured Europe and the US, receiving two nominations for Gríman – The Icelandic Theatre Awards – including Most Innovative Performance. In 2020 she made her first short dance film ‘Homesick’, in collaboration with Danielle Agami (Batsheva Dance Company, Ate9) which is published exclusively on NOWNESS. In 2020 she also directed the digitally-devised Zoom play ‘In These Uncertain Times’, in response to how the COVID-19 pandemic is impacting the arts. The New York Times described the performance as “like a lyrical essay, poetic, emotive and fluid,” and it has been used as a resource by numerous academic and critical researchers as a pivotal theatrical work during the pandemic.In 2021 Samantha received a Fulbright Scholarship Award to work with Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, where she was highly focused on research into the works of Pina Bausch, and original artistic creations emerging from that research. During her time, she developed several projects, as well as assisted on a restaging of Bausch’s Blaubart, under the rehearsal direction of Barbara Kaufmann and Helena Pikon. Her first creation in collaboration with the company was ‘Mother Melancholia’ and was co-commissioned by Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, and premiered at the Pina Bausch Zentrum in Wuppertal, and is currently playing festivals internationally. The film won the Audience Choice Award at Cinedans in the Netherlands.In March 2023 at Cinedans she premiered her second Wuppertal-based work: Romance a dance film in response to her research into the works of Pina Bausch in an illuminating meeting point with the short story “It was Romance” by Miranda July. Developed in a close collaboration between Shay and an intergenerational ensemble of dancers from Tanztheater Wuppertal, the creative point of departure for “Romance” centers on the company's first transgender dancer, Naomi Brito, and how her transition was catalyzed by the roles of women as she experienced them in the Bausch repertory. Shot on 16mm film in Pina Bausch's iconic and aging Lichtburg rehearsal studio, “Romance” dances on the fault lines between fiction and reality, dance and documentary, in a fertile intergenerational dialogue between past, present and future, and through a fresh and powerful encounter, assures that the power of an aging legacy is never ending. Romance is also currently circulating festivals worldwide.In October 2023 she accepted an award for outstanding achievement in dance film at Choreoscope in Barcelona, in connection with her two latest films, Mother Melancholia, and Romance. Samantha is still based in Wuppertal, and currently a Special Research Fellow at the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale, where she is preparing her first stage works since the pandemic, alongside a series of short films emerging from the same creation. The new stage project is a radical restaging of one of her earliest works, and will be produced in partnership with the Grotowski Institute and the Pina Bausch Zentrum in 2024.

Vertical dance is used as a metaphoric aesthetic where the dancer's relationship with gravity generates tension as they navigate the difficulties of dealing with change, the conflict between, the fear of falling and the desire to fly. The poetry of suspended intimacy and physicality is born, expressing the balance between closeness and isolation, the emptiness of the end and the struggle for acceptance. Negotiating this poetic reality, we return to being with the other in their absence through the ghosts of the past and the inability to listen. Listen is a vertical dance performance that explores the sense of vulnerability while negotiating with reality.The performance is a conversation between two artists that are separated by a literal ocean, Magalie Lanriot in Europe and Roel Seeber in The United States of America. Connected by a shared fascination with and a love of dancing in vertical spaces, Magalie and Roel influence each other, blending their distinct artistic approaches, diverse backgrounds, and experiences. This cross-continental collaboration holds the potential of an evolution of vertical dance as a discipline, fostering a rich exchange that provides fresh perspective and the potential to create a new paradigm for the field of Vertical Dance.Their work is a merging of these realities, both poetic and global. Only through deep listening can they bridge the gap of language and culture. Through improvisation and a dialogue in the moment, their new language highlights emotions through a desire to understand. This new approach explores the present moment, the fragility of relations and all that is unexpected, while offering an artistic image and metaphor for human existence.
